Districlima enlarges its second energy production plant in Barcelona

Since the opening of the second High Efficiency Energy Plant of DISTRICLIMA in Tànger street in 2012, nearly twenty new buildings will be connected to the network this 2016. The growing energy demand of the urban heating and cooling network causes that the peak plant with two storage tanks of iced water -40 MWh each one- has fallen short to meet the new growth challenges.

DISTRICLIMA is expanding this Plant with an additional investment around 5 million Euros, installing a second high-end negative cold production equipment of 6.7 MW from Friotherm and installing in the third and final deposit available the battery packs to obtain another 40 MWh of cold storage capacity.

This way, the DISTRICLIMA Plant at Tanger Street will have two equipments of negative cold production, so that the glycol supercooled water can flow through the ice batteries submerged in the deposits and freeze the water contained therein. This cooling energy, produced and stored as explained, will be available during the hours of customer demand, basically by day, while it will have been produced at night, when demand is lower and production costs are also lower. This is another example of DISTRICLIMA’s raison d’être: the possibility of obtain shared benefits and efficiencies for all its customers - through economies of scale, expertise and use of local energy resources - in a way that, otherwise, hardly could be obtained.

The investment plan underway in DISTRICLIMA’s second plant also allows providing maximum security for the quality and continuity of the supply throughout the system, allowing integration and full flexibility in the means of production and in the energy storage available in both plants.
